It matches the customer's postcode against NZ Post's official rural postcode list, bundled directly into the app. No external API call or manual lookup is needed at checkout.
The app detects the rural postcode and shows the rates you've set up for rural customers. Your urban-only rates are hidden. Urban customers see the reverse: their normal rates, with the rural ones hidden.
No. The postcode lookup runs server-side using a bundled dataset with no external API call, so there's no noticeable delay at checkout.
Yes. Rules match rates by the name shown at checkout, and you can add a live courier rate's exact checkout name under Custom courier and rate names in the app, so rural-only and urban-only rules apply to live rates too.
Yes. Set up a separate shipping rate for rural customers (e.g. a “Rural Delivery” rate at $8.00) and the app will show it only to customers with a rural postcode, hiding it from urban customers.
No. A rural surcharge is optional. Plenty of stores use the app purely to control which rates are available to rural and urban customers, at whatever prices they've already set.
Yes. You can apply rules to as many rates as you like, so you can offer several services or price points and still control exactly which customers see each one.
Yes. The app works inside your existing zones rather than replacing them. Keep separate zones for different regions or islands, and your rural and urban rules apply within each one.
Yes. Create a separate Shopify shipping zone for each island (selecting its regions) and add your rates to each. The app applies your rural and urban rules within every zone, so a South Island customer sees your South Island rate, split into rural or urban by their postcode. Your regions and prices stay in Shopify; the app works on top.
Yes. Address exceptions in Advanced settings override the normal postcode rules for a postcode you name — for example, showing every available rate in an area your courier treats differently — without touching the main rural list.
Both are supported with dedicated rate options. You can assign specific shipping rates to Waiheke (postcodes 1081 and 1971) and Great Barrier Island (Aotea, postcodes 0960-0963 and 0991) customers, independently of your rural or urban rules. The Waiheke RD postcode (1971) can even have its own separate rate from the rest of the island.
No. Nothing needs rebuilding. Your zones, rates and prices stay in Shopify exactly as they are — the app sits on top and decides which of those rates each customer sees, based on their postcode.
No. The app works through Shopify's own shipping setup, so there's no theme edit, no code snippet and no checkout redesign.
NZ Post's rural postcode boundaries change from time to time as delivery routes and subdivisions shift, so the list isn't static. The app ships with the current NZ Post rural list and we update it with app releases. If a customer lets you know their postcode is missing or being treated incorrectly, you can add it directly in the app, or use an address exception to handle it on its own.
